Francios Gervais

Born 1963 in Paris. Works as
an illustrator and artist in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

François Gervais doesn’t make a big fuss about himself, at least not on paper. A what-ever-that-means DSATC in Visual Communication from the Ecole Superieure des Arts et Industries Graphiques in Paris serves as his academic credentials. His every fax says more about him: Light brushstrokes make his messages small works of art, illustrated with dancing figures, jumping letters and pictorial greetings. So much charm is irresistible – romantic dreams dreamt up in François Gervais’s studio are translated, for instance, into the interior of a restaurant, the design for Fiat or a showroom for Canon. Most of his time, however, is devoted to his work as an artist, including a series of oil paintings with wine as subject; or a sculpture, created from flotsam and driftwood, for the city of Amsterdam. His “Variations” for milk embody his ideas: “Organic with lots of life and movement, positive images” – as he himself characterizes his designs, calling them representative of his work. Inspired by a variety of sources, such as Arabic calligraphy and Romanticism, François Gervais recreates the theatrical side of life. On the milk glass he created “a stage for a female figure, the sensuality of experiencing nature, dance and skirmishes, in a strange, abstract language – perhaps the language of Milk?”
